Saw the documentary on it a while ago and yeah definitely widespread, even on 'bone-stock' rifles. Some people even got killed etc because of it, but still no fix IIRC... Made a mental note to never buy one after hearing that..

I have a 700 with no issues ever. I have 870 shotguns from 6 different decades and never had an issue with them... In fact, in a quick google search, I could not find anyone say anything bad (worthwhile at least) about the 700 series.

I have seen something in the past about this. My pull is set around 5 lbs. That may have something to do with it. I think someone needs to check your setup out. If the safety switch triggers it, then you must have something screwed up inside. That is weird. Remington repairs any large issues found on .77% or higher gun related issues. So yours must fall in the less then 3/4 of 1% issue.

No person needs to check my setup out. I own a 700 that has malfunctioned twice without cause. The models tribulations have been well documented over several decades, and they continue for others as well. It shall remain on the shelf, unused. Even if someone "checked it out" why should I endanger myself and others by using it. Their act of "checking it out" is not going to guarantee 100% that it won't happen again. NOR WITH THE MODELS REPUTATION WILL I GET A GUARANTEE FROM THAT INDIVIDUAL THAT IT IS 100% SAFE AND THAT THEY WILL STAKE THEIR REPUTATION ON IT.

I own and use other guns that I have come to enjoy more than the bolt-action. I am most partial to the 742 semi-auto .30-06 I now carry. With the ten rounds, much more firepower in so much shorter a time...great for a swift moving pack of hogs.

Further, how would you live with yourself if you used it and it went off and killed somebody, knowing it had done so in the past? Knowing its reputation, how would you defend yourself in court in a wrongful death lawsuit? While some of you seem to want to speak right past the fact that there are problems with the 700 that Remington (and apparently some of you) doesn't want to acknowledge, I guarantee you that if I were to kill sombody with it beacuse of this problem, the plaintiff's attorneys woud DAMN SURE make the whole case about it.

I'm not going to be that defendant: Period. Done. Over.

Tony, I was not trying to rock the boat or beat a dead horse. Any gun should be made safe before doing anything with it. My factory pull was set at 3.1 lbs which is too light for a rifle. Having a class III license I know what I want in a gun. No gun should have under a 5lb pull. I used the set screw adjuster and now come in at around 5.5lbs. Again, I have heard of your issue before. Far from common is all I was saying. Maybe you should contact Remington. Their service is first class. When I added my suppressor to my XDm 40 I had issues from it. Springfield was quick to take care of me. Remington works almost as well when it comes to customer service. No gun company wants an unsafe gun on the market.

I like the 30-6, big fan of my 30-30s and 308s. I think if you like the 30-6 you would have a blast with a WWII era Mosin Nagant. On the longer side with a 5 round internal mag. Damn fun bolt action gun to shoot. Buy the old surplus ammo in a spam can and you can get the 7.62x54r 440 rounds and gun including FFL costs for under $260. I think Buds online has them delivered for under $115. It is a blast to drive. I can hit a 10" target at 600 yars with the iron sites. I sportorized another Nagant, cut 4" off the barrel added a scope and can shatter a 10" plate at 1800 yards now. Anytime I take friends and family to the range, I have to bring it. That is so accurate, so easy to take apart and put back together, and so much fun to shoot. My wife loves it. She is 10 for 10 at 300 yards and iron sights.

Sorry you are having issues. No matter the age of the gun, I would contact Remington, tell them your issue and see what they have to say. Tell them that the conversation is being recorded and you are putting them "on notice". I tell you they will get it taken care of at that point. Good luck, stay safe. Good idea to keep the gun hanging up for now. I have more then 1 gun and less then 38 and all of them get time out. I think everyone should take advantage of their rights.

Here's a link I found relating to your issue...

But the customer complaints, and more than 75 lawsuits, have alleged the 700 is susceptible to firing without the trigger being pulled. At least two dozen deaths and more than 100 injuries have been linked to accidental discharges involving the 700's trigger mechanism.

    Tony,
I was just trying to offer my advice on how to correct the problem but it sounds like you've got it handled. If you ever want to sell the 700, let me know. The 742 is a great design btw. Happy Hunting

Ya'll are right about Remington's customer service. It is top notch. My 1100 bought new in '78 (for $199, new, in the box!), and by '81 it was cracking through the pistol grip on the stock. I called Remington. They put me immediately through to one of their gunsmiths in their custom gun shop. He knew right away what was up. He stated that they cut the grip too narrow for the 3" magnums for a few runs. Told me to send it in. When I stated that I didn't have the original box he said he would send me one. Now that is NICE! He send me one, paid the freight both ways. This was before it was against the law to ship you a gun directly to your house...I think it is against the law now...isn't it? When I got it back, DAMN! They had replaced the stock and the fore grip. It was the most beautiful wood I have ever seen in a stock. They didn't have to do that, to go tho that extent to make me happy, but they made it a special experience for me. And obviously they had been saving that pair for something special. It was like a matched set. Still gives me a boner to look at it. I think I know what "burled" mean now. It was so beautiful I ordered gun chaps for it (remember Gun Chaps in the 80's?) so I wouldn't mess it up. Still have them. The stock has only one or two hard to see indentions in the laquer coat. Chaps for the 700 also. Bought an 11-87 to retire the 1100, it now a family heirloom. Immediately removed the wood stock on the 11-87 and mothballed it for those that inherit it, replace by Mossy Oak synthetics.
I've never had any problems with my Sweet 16 1100 I got in the 7th grade, nor the 1100, nor two 870 Express Walmart Specials for the swamp, nor the 11-87, nor the Nylon 66. And as bad a reputation the 742 has for jamming, it hasn't happened to me. Even with the 10-shot aftermarket magazine.

Women feel. We men don't. We carry what is broke into the garage and fix it. That's what we do...we FIX things. That is not what women want us to do. They want us to feel the problem, not fix it. In this case, I'm going to resist my normal instincts to resolve the problem by fixing it. We don't have to fix this one, guys. There is too much fun to be had in the future using those other guns without always having it in the back of my mind... Even if everything checked out on it, even by REmington..what's this sum'bitch gonna' do when I flick that safety forward?

I have a 700 BDL only fired 3 different times at the range then I saw the documentary on it going off on its own. I have had the rifle put up since even though I have not had the issue but my solution to it instead of selling it and taking a loss is buying a Jewell custom trigger once I start working again. I mean only options you have really if you arent going to use it and dont trust it, either sell, change the trigger or destroy it.

Tony, first gotta say I love the two 700's I own. They have been trusty rifles. They have both been dinged and dropped while hiking the hills for whitetail and never had a mishap until someone else used my rifle.

It was an early 90's model 700 adl bought new and not modified. Not an older one featured in the documentary. After about 8yrs I upgraded to new rifle and my dad wanted to use my old 700. While at the range he racked a round, got the sights on target, squeezed, squeezed harder, and nothing. He realized the safety was on. He backed off to look for the safety and when he switched it to off the gun fired! Hands were not on the trigger.

That was a user error in my opinion and I learned a little more about gun safety that day. I dont think it wad the rifle's fault, but it did go off unexpectedly and that was the op question.

I'd recommend anyone that accidently pulls the trigger on a 700 while the safety is on to immediately unload the chambered round before switching off the safety as a precaution.

I hope this story helps. Feel free to pm with any questions
